A railway track was blown up on Sainthia-Andal section of Eastern Railways on the first day of the 48-hour shutdown by Maoists in West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar on Monday.
Three metres of the railway track between Panchsura and Bhimgarh in Birbhum district was found to have been blown up by the railway staff when they went to the spot for routine inspection in the morning, railway sources said.
Train services on the route were suspended and work was on to restore the track.
Security is tight in Bihar, Jharkhand and parts of West Bengal for a 48-hour bandh call by the CPI(Maoists) to protest against violence in Nandigram.
In Jharkhand, Maoists exchanged fire with security forces in Saranda forest and a huge cache of explosives and detonators were recovered from Hazaribag district.
A long-range patrolling team, comprising district police and CRPF personnel, retaliated when the Maoists started firing on seeing them approaching Hinburu where they were positioned.
The ultras made a hasty retreat in view of the mounting pressure from the forces. Two rifles, live cartridge and two can-bombs were recovered.
