Tamil Nadu is made to surmount a lot of difficulties for obtaining welfare projects, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Monday.
Inaugurating the Mass Rapid Transit System between Velachery and Tiruvanmiyur here, the Chief Minister said that to get the Salem railway division, the State’s leaders had to toil for nearly a decade because the creation of the new division was opposed by a neighbouring State.
Tamil Nadu had to make some compromise before getting it.
Be it irrigation project or any scheme that would bring benefits for the people, the State had to overcome stiff resistance from various quarters.
Expressing concern over the increasing number of road accidents, the Chief Minister said only well trained drivers should be allowed to operate buses and lorries and police personnel should keep a watch on drivers, especially on highways.
Appeal
Appealing to commuters to patronise MRTS services in a big way, he said the existing transport facilities were not commensurate with the growing population.
Union Minister T.R. Baalu said the Railways should consult the State to know its requirement.
Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu sought the State’s help in extending the MRTS beyond St. Thomas Mount.
