Politics gets murkier in Karnataka
A day after resigning from the post of Karnataka chief minister, a dispirited B S Yeddyurappa got into election talks with his party MLAs.
 INDIA , 21-November-2007  0:52:31 AM
The more things change, the more they stay the same in Karnataka politics. President's rule, the assembly in suspended animation and coalition breakdowns, but this time round it does look as if elections are imminent.

The JD(S) leadership is well aware that not all of its MLAs in Karnataka approve of the party's repeated backtracking on its alliances.

There was dissent when H D Deve Gowda issued the instructions to vote against Yeddyurappa's confidence motion. MLAs did not want to comment on camera for obvious reasons and Gowda will need to quell that potential rebellion.

A day after resigning from the post of Karnataka chief minister, a dispirited B S Yeddyurappa got into election talks with his party MLAs.

''Because of the JD(S), there would be unnecessary elections, because of the JD(S) the expense of elections, because of the JD(S) no development works for the last one and a half months, because of the JD(S) a sense of betrayal and disgust among the people for politicians,'' said B S Yeddyyurappa, acting chief minister, Karnataka.

The third big party, the Congress has already been let down by the JD(S) - theirs was the first attempt at a coalition with the JD(S) at the beginning of the current assembly term.

However, this is politics and when Gowda dashed to Delhi after making sure Yeddyurappa would have to resign, there was speculation of a reunion.

The JD(S) MLAs find themselves facing an election, most of them did not want and are concerned about the battering the party's image has taken.
