Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday instructed the police to take steps to check the activities of hired gangs and rowdy elements in the State.
After reviewing the law and order and crime situation at a meeting with top officials at the Secretariat, he also asked them to initiate steps to prevent robbery and thefts in the suburbs.
The meeting, which went on for more than two hours, was attended by Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan, Electricity Minister N. Veeraswamy, Agriculture Minister S. Arumugam, Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy, Home Secretary S. Malathi, Director-General of Police P. Rajendran, Chennai Police Commissioner Nanchil Kumaran and zonal Inspectors-General.
Mr. Karunanidhi emphasised that night patrolling should be intensified to check the movement of anti-social elements. He made it clear that the police should not interfere in civil matters. Under no circumstance should there be death in police custody. With a view to preventing road accidents and the consequent loss of lives, joint efforts should be made by police and transport department officials to ensure that drivers adhered to traffic rules.
The Chief Minister said that jail inmates should not be allowed to indulge in activities which went against the law.
Stringent action should be taken against officials who connived with erring inmates, he said, according to an official press release.
An official source said that besides major law and order incidents, including politically motivated attacks, the crime situation was thoroughly discussed. Property offences and their detection were reviewed and it was in this connection that instructions had been issued for taking steps to prevent such incidents. Much stress was laid on the prevention of road accidents.
