Real estate barons Gopal and Sushil Ansal and three others have been sentenced to two years in prison in the Uphaar fire case under the charges of criminal negligence.
But all five have been let off on bail. The remaining seven, who have been sentenced to seven years in prison, are already in custody.
The Patiala court has held 12 people guilty of the death of 59 people, who died of suffocation in the Uphaar Cinema in 1997 when a fire in the transformer turned the hall into a gas chamber with no safety exits.
The bail was granted to Ansals on furnishing a personal and a surety bond of Rs 25,000 each in the case.
The court also directed the CBI to conduct fresh inquiry against the then DCP (Licensing) Amod Kanth and other public servants for their alleged role in granting sanctions to run Uphaar cinema.
In 1997, Uphaar Cinema turned into a gas chamber when a transformer caught fire killing 59 people.
When smoke started filling the balcony of the cinema minutes after the interval during the screening of the Bollywood film Border, the audience assumed it was a spectacular stunt to complement the action in the film.
The seven exits downstairs saved hundreds. But 300 people upstairs were trapped. The only exit was bolted from outside
