Ruling BJP in Gujarat on Friday dropped 26 sitting MLAs as it came out with the third list of 83 candidates for the second phase of next month's assembly elections.
The third list was finalised at a late night meeting of the party's Central Election Committee chaired by BJP President Rajnath Singh and attended by senior leader L K Advani and Chief Minister Narendra Modi among others.
The party dropped 26 sitting MLAs in the list of candidates announced tonight, senior leader Ananth Kumar told reporters.
The party will field around 100 new faces in the polls while dropping about 50 sitting legislators in an attempt to overcome anti-incumbency to retain power.
It had already announced the candidature of Modi from his Maninagar constituency which goes to polls in the second phase on December 16.
Nominees for 11 seats out of the total of 182 seats are yet to be announced.
The saffron party will field 29 women candidates this time as against 12 last time, he added.
