| Today, on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima, much before the crack of dawn, men, women and children across coastal Orissa head for the nearest water body to set afloat toy boats of all shapes and sizes, laden with lamps, fruits, betel leaves, nuts, crackers and even money.
Known as the Boito Bondano or Boat Festival, this is supposed to be a mass commemoration of the maritime glory of ancient Orissa, then known as Kalinga.
On this day, Oriya sailors of yore used to launch their long and risky voyage to South East Asian countries for trade and were given a warm send-off by their families.
But some others believe that the tradition is meant to offer prayers for the wellbeing of ancestors and seek their blessings.
The Boat festival also marks the end of the holy month of Kartik as also a month-long abstinence from non-vegetarian food in most Oriya families.
The day also marks the beginning of the Bali Jatra along the banks of river Mahandi in Cuttack, a huge fair linked to the Orissa's ancient trade ties with Indonesia and Thailand.
