Politicians arrive on scene inAssam
''Let them run the vehicle over me, unless these patients are treated, taken back to the hospital. I won't leave,'' said Arjun Munda.
 INDIA , 26-November-2007  0:8:31 AM
A day after a street clash between protesting Adivasis and local residents in Guwahati, politicians have taken over.

The protest took the state government by surprise. What's even more surprising is how politicians from the tribal-dominated state of Jharkhand, who have little base in Assam, are now using this, perhaps to make their presence felt outside their state.

BJP's Arjun Munda, former Jharkhand Chief minister and an Adivasi himself, was the first to arrive staging a protest when the hospital wanted to discharge some of the injured.

''Let them run the vehicle over me, unless these patients are treated, taken back to the hospital. I won't leave,'' said Arjun Munda.

The BJP seems to be out to woo the Adivasis who have sided with the Congress for years. The party is clearly on the back foot trying to look for answers.

''These are the times politicians fish in troubled waters, its happened in Assam before and happening now,'' said Jairam Ramesh, Leader, Congress.

Former union minister and JMM chief Shibu Soren was quick to empathise with the protesters. His party may be an ally of the UPA government at the Centre but Soren blamed the Congress government in the state for the violence.

''I'm an Adivasi. I know how these people feel. They deserve dignity, the responsibility of all these problems is government. If the government had listened to their demands this wouldn't have happened,'' said Shibu Soren, Leader, JMM.

There's a sudden outpouring of sympathy for the protesters, many of whom were injured. And the condition of those discharged from hospital appeared serious.

''We have been forced by the police to leave the hospital,'' said an injured Adivasi.

''The patients have been given Rs 500 and asked to leave,'' said Anil Topo, Adivasi leader.

Meanwhile, these newspaper photographs are fuelling protests in Upper Assam, which has a dominant Adivasi population.
