The traffic police are considering restricting and regulating movement of private vehicles near educational institutions to ensure the safety of schoolchildren.
Staggered school timings and car pools to pick up and drop them have been suggested for decongestion around the institutions.
According to a senior traffic police officer, these measures have become imperative in view of the problems arising out of the large number of private vehicles plying from and to schools. Lack of self-discipline among many of these vehicle users and parking of commercial vehicles in front of many of the schools pose danger to the lives of children. There are about 500 schools across the city and students use various modes of transport.
Almost on a daily basis, traffic police receive complaints of minor accidents near schools. In the recent past, fatal accidents involving schoolchildren were reported from Neelankarai, Washermenpet, Mogappair and Vyasarpadi. In Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, there are about five to eight schools. At least, 500 private cars and some 50 vans use narrow roads in the nearby residential localities. The scene is no different in Egmore, Triplicane, Ashok Nagar, T. Nagar and Velachery.
