The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) on Friday demolished a portion of the top floor of a residential building under commercial use in the Alwarpet area of the city.
The fourth floor of the building on Second Street, off Kasturi Ranga Road, housed a tailoring unit. Those in-charge were seen moving sewing machines out of the way of the hammers that pulled down the walls of the 1,500 square feet space. They alleged that the demolition notice was sent only three days ago.
The authority has issued demolition notices to more than 50 multi-storeyed commercial buildings whose owners had sought regularisation under the 1999 Regularisation Scheme and whose applications were rejected by the High Court-appointed Monitoring Committee.
CMDA officials said the demolition notices were being issued a month in advance, giving the owners time to furnish evidence in their support. Most such documentation related to buildings built before 1999. In the case of the building at Alwarpet, previous applications for regularisation had been rejected and demolition notice issued in March.
The builders had only been given approval for a residential building with three floors, they said.
