No permanent jobs for disabled in D
The High Court has refused to vacate a stay imposed on them because they failed to fill posts under the quota for the physically disabled.
 INDIA , 3-December-2007  0:38:18 AM
Disabled teachers at Delhi University now have the law on their side but there are still no permanent jobs for them. That's because the selection process remains frozen.

The High Court has refused to vacate a stay imposed on them because they failed to fill posts under the quota for the physically disabled.

But a bench has allowed 18 colleges to go ahead with their recruitment because they have inducted the mandatory three per cent of physically challenged persons in their faculties.

Vikas Gupta, Member, Sambhavan, NGO said, ''It is not being followed by the university. There are so many cases of gold medallists being rejected, the university is rejecting its own certificates!''

Rajan Mani, Advocate, Delhi High Court said, ''We receive several complaints through the year, if the university was serious about this it would have done something. The university files affidavits saying they cant find the right people.''

Mani has fought several cases on behalf of teachers who have special needs. He added that the Disabilities Act is at least 11 years and it's a shame that so little has been done since then.

Amarjeet Singh, M Phil, PhD, JNU said, ''I have given close to 40 interviews and been rejected. The kind of hardships a disabled person has to go is huge. No reason is given, you are just refused a job.''

Vikas has been teaching Political Science at Ramjas College. He said he considered himself lucky for having a full-time job.

''The infrastructure is lacking. It is difficult to get to college and walk in corridors, Braille books for college teachers are too expensive and tape recorders are given but they are insufficient,'' Vikas added.

College authorities say what's missing is not respect for those that are differently-abled but funding.
