Mumbai riots: Victims await justice
They were told that the politicians, policemen and other perpetrators would be brought to justice. Not surprisingly, it was a promise that wasn't kept
 INDIA , 7-December-2007  0:42:40 AM
Promise of justice was made to the 900 victims of the riots that followed the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

They were told that the politicians, policemen and other perpetrators would be brought to justice. Not surprisingly, it was a promise that wasn't kept.

Then, under pressure from social groups, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh announced four fast track courts and a committee to review pending cases under the supervision of the state Additional Chief Secretary.

Two months hence, none of this has translated into action.

And it still doesn't bode well for the victims, a Home Minister who is complacent despite the shocking inaction.

''The process has started, I feel the trial too will start soon,'' said R R Patil, Maharashtra Home Minister.

But there's a bigger betrayal. Victims and their families say that the fast-track courts won't achieve much anyway. they want the cases to be altogether reinvestigated.

Our say is that what's the point in having special courts when the Srikrishna Commission has said that you haven't investigated the cases. That you have shut 1365 cases without the court's permission and promoted all the concerned policemen instead of suspending them. So these assurances are only a farce.

The Congress government, which has been trying to retain its minority votebank recently announced the formation of a state Minority Affairs Department and committee to review the Sachchar Committee recommendations.

This even as the Srikrishna Commission report gathers dust.
