As politicians go chasing for Gujarat's 15 per cent tribal vote, NDTV met a tribal woman who shattered the myth of the backward exploited tribal.
Dashriben Chowdhary is a Gandhian footsolider who even today keeps the sprit of the Mahatma alive.
She follows in Gandhi's footsteps even today. Eighty-nine-years old now, Dashriben's has been a life of Khadi.
Born into a family of progressive tribals, footsoldiers of the freedom struggle in Vedhchi in south Gujarat, Dashriben joined the independence movement when she was just eight.
''We were given the task of spreading Gandhi's message. In Bardoli we went around in
groups telling people not to pay taxes,'' said Darshriben Chowdhary, Freedom Fighter.
Dashriben shatters the myth.. of the exploited backward tribal. She went on to get a college education and even taught Gandhiji's wife Kasturba to read and write when they were both in Pune's Yerwada jail in 1933.
Her vision is dimbut her memory is clearof a time of inspiring leadership
''We were not afraid. Gandhi bapu and Sardar's speeches had made us ready to face
the world,'' she added.
But ask her about today's politics and politicians and her mood changes.
NDTVWhat do you think of Narendra Modi?
Let's not talk of Narendra Modi. He exploits.
Dashriben is living proof of the contribution of tribals in our freedom struggle. But her people are perhaps not much better off than they were during independance.
The benifits of our freedom have not yet percolated down to them they still remain exploited still shackled.
