Fighting against SEZ
It is not for the first time Keri has seen protests. In 1994, Keri villagers drove out the controversial Dupont Nylon 6:6 project.
 INDIA , 10-December-2007  0:35:23 AM
It is peak season time in the tourists' paradise of Goa. But that's not the only thing that's keeping the Goans busy.

They are fighting for their land and their livelihood, taking on the giants to keep out the SEZ that are threatening to take over their homes.

In Keri in south Goa's Ponda district, 304 acres of land has been allotted to Cipla's Meditab for setting up a pharma based SEZ. One that promises direct employment to one lakh locals. But it is not a project that has gone down well with the villagers.

It is not for the first time Keri has seen protests. In 1994, Keri villagers drove out the controversial Dupont Nylon 6:6 project.

Dr Videsh Jhalmi, Chairman, Keri Action Committee said, ''Government has not done study of the plateau but given permissions. What will be the impact? It's an economical fragile area and they are going to set up a SEZ, people will face more problems. The local panchayat has not received any letter from the government that a SEZ will be set up in our village.''

''Government has not studied the matter seriously. We have told the government to scrap all SEZ until then we agitate till the SEZ are in Goa. The SEZ have not classified the type of employment that would be generated.''

In another part of the state, on the outskirts of Panjim, this is all that's left after a protest turned violent in Dona Paula.

The site of the Rajiv Gandhi IT Habitat Centre, that's already threatening to become a real estate scam with over 3/4th of land allegedly, being sold off to real estate developers for malls and shopping complexes.

Goa has already cleared the way for seven SEZ', while eight others are waiting for the Centre's nod but with the agitations, the government now seems to be on the back foot.
