Nandigram case: SC stays order
In a stern observation, the Court said, ''Why are you making this an issue? Your idea should be to bring back normalcy in Nandigram.''
 INDIA , 13-December-2007  2:50:38 AM
West Bengal government has received a major setback. The Supreme Court has refused to expunge the High Court's remarks that the police action in Nandigram in March this year was unconstitutional.

In a stern observation, the Court said, ''Why are you making this an issue? Your idea should be to bring back normalcy in Nandigram.''

Hearing the government's petition, the court restrained the CBI from proceeding against police officials involved in the March 14 firing but rejected a plea to appoint a committee for deciding compensation for victims.

CBI has told Supreme Court that they will submit a report on December 17. Supreme Court has issued notices to NGOs and other individuals who filed the petition in Calcutta High Court.

SC also rejected West Bengal plea to appoint a committee for awarding compensation to the Nandigram victims.
