Gujjar report today, Meena minister

 INDIA , 17-December-2007  0:57:59 AM
With Justice Chopra set to give his 200-page report on whether the Gujjars deserve ST status to the CM today, pressure has already started building up on the Raje government.

In a late night resignation drama, Rajasthan Food and Civil Supplies Minister Kirori Lal Meena sent his wife to the Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje's house to deliver his letter of resignation.

His wife Golma Devi, along with her nephew and an MLA Kantilal Meena, drove to CM's residence to deliver the letter as the minister was taken ill and could not go himself.

''I do not know much. He (Kirorilal Meena) is sick. It is under the Meena community's pressure and for their welfare that I handed over the letter to the Chief Minister,'' Golma Devi told reporters.

Asked why the BJP minister who represents Sawaimadhopur constituency resigned suddenly, she said she did not know.

Mahesh Sharma, President, Rajasthan BJP Unit said, ''Kirori Lal's letter is not a simple letter of resignation, it is a long letter in which he has said many things. He is a member of the cabinet and is entitled to his view as President of the BJP state unit. I will speak to him and only then will the Party take a stand.''

Kirori Lal is from the powerful Meena community, the Meenas are tribals who have cornered most of the benefits in the ST list.

They are opposed to the Gujjars being taken out of the OBC category and put into ST. They have threatened an agitation of their own if the Raje government recommends ST status for the Gujjars.
