Orissa farmers resort to suicides
Ramchandra Rana, a 40-year-old farmer from Kusuli village in Sambalpur hanged himself to death on December 17.
 INDIA , 22-December-2007  0:59:15 AM
Unfortunate incidents of loan burdened farmer suicides in Maharashtra, is now spreading among farmers in Orissa.

Ramchandra Rana, a 40-year-old farmer from Kusuli village in Sambalpur hanged himself to death on December 17.

This was the third consecutive year his crop had failed, Rana's bank loan had piled up to Rs 35,000. When the local mini bank served a red notice asking him to pay Rs 15,000 within 7 days or face penal action, Rana lost all hope.

Upasi Rana, Rana's widow said, ''The notice had upset him deeply. We lost our paddy crop. Even the money we had invested on maize and vegetable farming went down the drain.''

Farmers here say they haven't got any government aid or insurance money for crop failure.

Prasanna Pradhan a farmer from Kusuli, Sambalpur said, ''We did not receive any government help for the crop failure in the last 2 years and unlike farmers in other parts of the state we did not get crop insurance.''

Sambalpur is called Orissa's rice bowl and farmer suicide was unheard of here.

The village head warns that unless farmers get compensation for crop damage and the banks stop acting like loan sharks, the number could rise.

Gourang Nayak the Sarpanch of Kusuli said, ''This is the first suicide here. Banks harass farmers and if the loan burden grows and farmers continue to suffer crop loss we could see more.''

Already the issue has taken political colours. The Biju Janata Dal has planned a huge farmers' rally on the December 26 in Sambalpur.
