BPO companies resort to patrol cabs
The point is that help is just a few minutes away in an emergency
 INDIA , 22-December-2007  1:16:46 AM
It's safety first these days for BPO companies. In order to ensure that their employees are driven home safely at night, the companies now have patrol cars monitoring the routes used by the employees on their way to the office.

The point is that help is just a few minutes away in an emergency.

''If there is a security issue or even if there is a breakdown in the middle of the night, anywhere, immediately there would be these patrolling cabs,'' said Manoj Sharan, Chief Administrative Officer, WNS.

About 50 such patrol cars use the radio to talk to a special control room in Gurgaon. All communication takes place over a special frequency with the Gurgaon police listening in

the control room.

''We have dedicated people on line at night who monitor the separate frequency on which the security cabs function, plus any other SOS, even a sense of it. Irrespective of the BPO company the cabs come from, they have a common frequency and from the control room they can immediately get in touch with the Haryana police through a dedicated line,'' said Manoj Sharan, Chief Administrative Officer, WNS.

The next step is to install a GPS or Global positioning system in each call centre cab, so its exact location is tracked at all times but it's not just technology that needs to be upgraded.

Too often, the drivers of call centre cabs are discovered as the cause of drunken accidents or attacks against women employees.

''Malfunctioning of GPS device happens very often and the cabs disappear from the radar. If a driver has a mal-intension he just needs to unplug the wire,'' said Manoj Sharan, CAO, WNS.

So there's a renewed emphasis on sensitising the drivers, who are responsible for the security of BPO employees, especially women during the night.

Besides behavioural training, companies are now offering monetary incentives to drivers.
