| Three days ago, he was a rebel with a cause. But on Sunday, state Revenue Minister Narayan Rane was a humble Congressman rapped on the knuckles for publicly attacking the chief minister of Maharashtra.
''I will work within the framework of the party. I am a responsible member of the party and a minister,'' said Narayan Rane, Revenue Minister, Maharashtra.
Despite signs of growing frustration and his offer to resign, Rane says he is satisfied. And no, the party is not unhappy with him. A rebel chastised or a rebel mollified?
Party president Sonia Gandhi had met Rane with unusual swiftness, unusual under the circumstances.
''I have not defamed the party, I merely criticised the Maharashtra government for not doing enough for the people. I don't think the high command has any complaints against me,'' said Rane.
This is not the first time Rane has raised the banner of revolt and it's possibly not the last.
But irrespective of his own political fortunes, the Congress high command will have to put its house in order in Maharashtra two years ahead of assembly elections
