Mumbai slum dwellers rue govtapathy
Protestors marched up to the Secretariat with a cheque for the Chief Minister and pledged Rs 2000.
 INDIA , 27-December-2007  0:55:53 AM
Angry slum dwellers in Mumbai protested against the state government accusing it of being anti-poor.

The protestors also accused the state government of doling out sops to builders and blamed it for bulldozing the homes of slum dwellers.

Protestors marched up to the Secretariat with a cheque for the Chief Minister and pledged Rs 2000.

''The government gave the land 20 years ago to builders like Hiranandani for 40 paise per acre. Why doesn't it show the same generosity towards slum dwellers. Now, we have presented a cheque of Rs 2000, at Rs 40 per acre. We want the government to allot 50 acres to the slum dwellers, whose houses were demolished calling them illegal,'' said Medha Patkar, Activist, National Alliance of People's Movement.

Each flat in this posh complex of Hiranandani Gardens, Powai in suburban Mumbai sells for crores but is leased out for just Re 1 per hectare.

That's just 40 paise for an acre, in a space that has 200 acres of land available in a city which is among the costliest real estate in the world.

Social activists allege that the land was leased under the urban land ceiling regulations for low and middle income houses, that now have no place for them.

Hiranandani Developers, who have developed this property, were unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts.

The state government said it will discuss the slum dwellers issues in January.

But the allegations once again throw the spotlight on the builder-politician nexus believed to be largely responsible for the failure of the now repealed Urban Land Ceiling Act.
