That favorite icon of Delhi, the auto rickshaw is getting a modern makeover. 1000 autos have been selected to test-drive a new campaign.
The makeover will include advertisements placed on their roofs and drivers in uniforms. They will hit the roads in two months.
''We'll allow a six feet back lit advertisement on the auto. It will be on a 50-50 revenue sharing basis between the MCD and the auto driver. NGO Nyaya Bhoomi will help train the drivers on basic road sense,'' said Amiya Chandra, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the MCD Remunerative Project Cell.
Drivers who deliver great service will be rewarded with advertising on their vehicles. Half of all advertising revenue will be given to the drivers, the other half will go to the government.
To sign up for this scheme drivers will have to charge by the meter, be polite to passengers and not refuse any routes. They will have to keep the autos clean and not drink or smoke while driving.
Drivers will also get accident and health insurance . The best autos will have a Star class status that will be posted on their vehicles.
But are the auto rickshaws ready for the makeover?
On the face of it, this proposal looks like a win-win situation for all- the auto drivers, the MCD and the passengers, but one apprehension that the autowallahs have is that will this plan be as promising in reality as on paper.
