 INDIA , 27-December-2007  23:39:18 PM
Last 16 hours in the communally sensitive Kandhmal district of Orissa have been quiet, although the indefinite curfew remains in force. Four additional companies of CRPF and RAF have been dispatched after state Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday sought more reinforcements.

At least four people died on Thursday in the communal violence that first began on Monday. Unconfirmed reports however put the casualty figure at eight.

The worst hit areas were Brahmanigaon, Barkhama and Nuagaon areas in the district where both communities suffered losses. Some areas of Kandhmal were still inaccessible and police was working to clear the roads.

The police had to open fire in Brahmanigaon area where an angry mob set a police station on fire. Ironically, the eruption of violence coincided with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's unscheduled one-hour visit to the district.

Curfew in four towns of the district, which was lifted on Thursday morning, was re-imposed with the police anticipating more trouble.

The Chief Minister and DGP Gopal Nanda were at district headquarters of Phulbani to negotiate with the tribals and leaders of Hindu and Christian communities.

Contrary to the reports coming in, the state CM has reportedly claimed that the situation has normalised to a great extent.

According to the district administration, situation in some parts had improved, but tension continued in other areas such as Baliguda and Daringibadi. Many Christian families had fled their homes in Barkhama.

The Centre had asked the state government for a detailed report.

The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has also sought a report from the state government on the violence in four towns of Kandhamal district.

The violence was sparked off on Monday when mobs led by Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists set ablaze churches, convents and some houses belonging to Christians.
