PM expected to pacify SEZ
However, the anti-SEZ groups on Wednesday said there would not be any stir during Singh's visit.
 INDIA , 28-December-2007  0:2:35 AM
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will arrive in Goa on Thursday for a two-day visit. His visit comes amid an anti-SEZ agitation that threatens to spoil the New Year celebrations in Goa.

While the Prime Minister is there to launch broadband services linking the capital Panjim to rest of the Talukas, there is speculation that he will try to end the stalemate between the state government and an anti-SEZ body, Goa's Movement Against SEZs.

However, the anti-SEZ groups on Wednesday said there would not be any stir during Singh's visit.

''We have sought appointment with the Prime Minister to discuss SEZ issue. We are waiting for the reply,'' Goa's Movement Against SEZs(GMAS) organising secretary Siddhanath Buyao said.

Agitators also asked tourists to leave the State by Friday as the agitation may take an ugly turn.

The call by the group has triggered fears in the tourism industry in Goa of a huge loss of revenue due to panic cancellations from domestic and foreign tourists especially when New Year festivities are round the corner.

The state government, on the other hand, has filed a criminal case against G-MAS convener, Mathany Saldanha for the warning.

G-MAS has a widespread protest planned for Friday against the taking over of agricultural and forest land for as many as seven SEZs.

Taking no chance, the state police force has increased security in and around Panaji city with policemen being posted at every nook and corner of the capital which is full with tourists, DGP BS Brar said. (With PTI inputs)
