 INDIA , 29-December-2007  1:37:6 AM
An euphoric BJP on Friday dubbed its poll victory in Himachal Pradesh, which came after the success in Gujarat, as the start of a ''process of change'' that would culminate at the Centre, a claim dismissed by both the ruling Congress and the Left.

While Congress rubbished BJP leader LK Advani's assertion as ''day dreaming'', the CPI-M said the results of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections will have no impact on the Centre.

The defeat in Himachal elections dealt a body blow to the Congress, already smarting under the loss in Gujarat, with senior leaders saying it was totally unexpected as the party went into introspection mode.

Though Congress president Sonia Gandhi chose to remain silent on what caused the jolt, senior party leader RK Dhawan admitted that the party was ''not expecting'' such an outcome.

''We fought the elections on the plank of development and our Government was instrumental in carrying out a lot of development. We were not expecting such an outcome'', Dhawan, who is in charge of party affairs in the hill state, said.

Buoyed by the victory, Advani said it was the start of a ''process of change'' that will take the BJP to the Centre due to the ''all round failure'' of the Congress-led UPA.

''A process of change has begun in favour of the BJP this year. This will continue and will ultimately culminate at the Central Government,'' he said.

He said the Assembly poll results should be seen in the context of the ''rapidly growing unpopularity'' of the UPA government at the Centre which has failed on all fronts.

However, CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat said the results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will have no fall out on the Centre and the Congress-led Central government will complete its full five year term.

CPI National Secretary D Raja was of the view that secularism alone was not enough to resist the 'Modi-brand of communalism'. ''Both imperialism and communalism are dangerous for democracy,'' he said
