 INDIA , 31-December-2007  1:9:30 AM
Tension continues in riot-hit Kandhmal district of Orissa, where three people have died in the communal violence of the last one week - though some reports say nine people have died.

The Centre has now sent in forces and Home Minister Shivraj Patil will visit the state with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reassuring Christian community leaders that they will be protected.

The Christians held a dharna outside the Orissa Assembly on Sunday to condemn the atrocities committed against their community during the last seven days of communal violence.

They demanded a CBI probe into the violence, a special economic package for the backward district and immediate reconstruction of the places of worship and homes that have been damaged.

Following a week of violence, many Christians in Kandhmal have fled their villages. So far, only 500 homeless people have been provided shelter and relief.

Despite government claims that the situation in Kandhmal is normal, leaders of seven opposition parties, including the Congress and the Left, were denied entry to the trouble-torn district on Saturday.

The situation in Kandhmal showed marginal improvement on Sunday. In some places, Sunday prayers were held amid tight security.

But night-time curfew will continue in four places, including the district headquarters town of Phulbani.

The heavy presence of police and paramilitary forces have prevented any escalation of violence, but the scars of the violence will take time to heal.
