Three days after two young women were molested on New Year's Eve in Mumbai, 14 suspects have been arrested.
But despite the dramatic way in which the suspects were rounded up and presented to the media on Thursday midnight, it was clear that the police were merely trying to save face.
After a day of rumours and high drama, out of 14 suspects arrested, four of them were suspected molestors from a mob of 50 who mobbed two young women during New Year's eve celebrations in Mumbai.
The arrests came as a morale-booster after an embarrassing faux pas from their chief 24 hours earliera and public outrage that lasted three days.
But a senior officer and his deputies sent out quite a different message claimimg that the police had not let down the people as alleged.
But still, some hard questions remain unanswered:
Why did the police wait for a complaint to be registered by the photojournalists?
Why didn't the police register a case themselves on the night of the incident?
Why wait for so long as waiting meant a crucial delay of three days?
KL Prasad, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) said, ''I give credit to the public. If the pictures had not been clicked, there may not have been a case. Case should be registered so that jurisdiction should not exist.''
But behind these sugarcoated accolades was Mumbai's shame.
