Hyderabad is also working towards solving its traffic woes and in another three months a Rs 8700 crore Metro Rail project is set to start.
The city of Nizams hopes to become home to the world's biggest transport project to be built under public-private partnership.
Work on Metro Rail will cover 66 kms on three routes and will start in May and will take four years to complete.
N V S Reddy, MD, Hyderabad Metro Rail said, ''If it is elevated, it will cost 135 to 140 crore per km. If it is underground, it will be 400 to 500 crore per km. Operating costs will also be high for the ventilation and AC. Also the main issue now is of terrorism. A very rich country like Dubai has not opted for it because of that reason.''
Hyderabad has a local train network whose biggest drawback is that train frequency is poor and there is no tie-up with the bus service.
Despite that, one lakh passengers use it everyday. The estimate is that 16 lakh passengers will travel in the Metro everyday.
Reddy said, ''That is a very limited experiment. We have spent only 200 crores on it. It is the existing rail system that we have augmented and the rail system caters to long distance and freight traffic. Urban transportation is not their responsibility.''
There will be 63 new stations that will be way above the stations in existence, literally because they will be built at the third floor level.
