| MP schools to perform Surya Namaska |

| Despite opposition, the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh government is going ahead with its controversial Surya Namaskar programme in government schools on Saturday to mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
At around 9 am, all schools will perform Surya Namaskar or the sun salutation simultaneously.
The state government says its a voluntary programme but it has tried to ensure maximum participation by writing to all ministers, MLAs and bureaucrats. It has even issued the Surya Namaskar guidebook to many institutions.
The mass effort has been criticised at a time the government is under fire for the pathetic state of schools, the high dropout rate and lack of teachers a crisis that came into sharp focus earlier this week when a parent attempted suicide in protest.
Meanwhile, the opposition has dismissed the move as a case of misplaced priorities.
They insist that that the government needs to focus on basic demands like infrastructure instead of putting the spotlight on yoga but Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has a different take.
Yoga brings people together. We have not divided anyone with this yoga. Yoga keeps the body healthy. People abroad have also taken up Surya Namaskar and Yoga. It's purpose is to keep one healthy. It is not compulsory but it will be good if everybody follows it,'' he said
