Efforts on to douse Kolkata blaze

 INDIA , 14-January-2008  2:17:14 AM
The Burra Bazaar fire still rages, as efforts to put it out are on a war footing.

Several angry traders and shop owners, some of whom have already suffered losses running into crores of rupees, have turned violent, attacking media crews reporting the fire.

The traders also reportedly went ahead smashing cameras and chasing away reporters. Burra Bazaar traders are enraged that CM Budhhadeb Bhattacharya has not visited the site of the blaze yet.

Firemen and Armymen are battling to put out the fire that started early on Saturday morning. Highly inflammable material stored in shops and godowns of the building are adding fuel to the fire.

The fire is now believed to be on the top 5 floors of the 13th storied building. According to recent reports a shortage of continuous water supply is compounding the problem of firefighters.

And while the flames can no longer be seen from the street, dense clouds of smoke seem to indicate that the fire still hasn't been extinguished totally.

The Army was called in to assist as a diesel generator on the 13th floor, with 300 litres of fuel went up in flames.

''It's under control and the West Bengal fire service are doing a damn good job. They are the ones who are actually doing it. Its a combined effort so things are under control,'' said an Army officer.

With the fire-controlled up to the fifth floor, traders were allowed to salvage what goods they could. But traders in the vicinity are taking no chances.

''We are not far from where the fire is. If the lower portion catches fire again we will be affected. Its over 40 hours but the fire is still not controlled. We have been anxious since the night before. We have to safeguard our wares. Our position is grim,'' said a trader.

The cause of the fire is not known yet. It was the initial delay in dousing the first flames, as there was a water shortage, which let it spread to this extent. The fight will continue, as there are still flames in the building.
