Odd ways to even out traffic
Before you step into your car and set off for work, you might need to make sure that your car licence plate carries the right number.
 INDIA , 17-January-2008  2:13:36 AM
It has been tried in other cities of the world - allowing the use of cars with number plates ending in odd and even numbers on alternate days.

And now Bangalore city authorities are considering this rather drastic approach to solve its traffic crisis.

Before you step into your car and set off for work, you might need to make sure that your car licence plate carries the right number.

Drastic remedies are being considered to fight Bangalore's traffic woes - and one such is allowing cars with odd and even numbers to ply only on alternate days.

''One of the methods suggested especially in high density areas, central parts of city is to have staggered movement of vehicles. In some cities, even and odd numbers alternate - that means to a certain extent the number of vehicles coming to the central part will come down,'' said N Achyuth Rao, Bangalore Police Commissioner.

The idea is still a twinkle in the eye of traffic police but car drivers want the whole plan nipped in the bud.

''I think it is an irritating because some people don't even know their registration number whether it is odd or even. I think it is going to result in a lot of chaos,'' said a car driver.

''I don't think this is going to work because we don't have a good public system, not in Bangalore at least. So you cannot stop people from using car and two wheelers,'' said another car owner.

Well, getting people to use public transport would be one of the main aims of such an exercise and the Police Commissioner does agree that a lot of work would be needed in this area.

''The problem can be genuine also. But one has to take the interest of the larger group rather than the smaller group,'' said Rao.'

Households with more than one car will, of course, have it easier. For the less well-heeled, will the Nano now come with a changeable number plate?
