Plan to clean Jama Masjid area
For too long, nothing has been done about the decay around Jama Masjid. That's what a new plan hopes to fix
 INDIA , 21-January-2008  9:29:49 AM
For too long, nothing has been done about the decay around Jama Masjid. That's what a new plan hopes to fix.

In addition to the magnificent mosque, the 30-acre Jama Masjid complex has two shrines, parks, and the historic Meena Bazaar, which still opens for business at the foot of the mosque blocking the entrance for worshippers.

In 1994, the High Court began hearing a case filed by a concerned citizen demanding more attention for the monument.

It has taken 13 years for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi or MCD to submit its response. For Rs 300 crore, this is what is being suggested:

A new underground space with four levels will be built

One level will hold the Meena Bazaar and new shops that will be auctioned

The other three levels will be reserved for parking

Auctioning the shops here will fund the 300-crore re-development.

''We have taken care to ensure that our plan will be all inclusive in terms of the fact that it will be beneficial for the people living around the area. Also, by making the project self sustainable, we will ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past, where government funds have been misutilised or wasted,'' said Vijay Singh, Nodal Officer, Jama Masjid Redevelopment.

It's upto the Delhi Urban Arts Commission or DUAC to now approve of the plan. A decision is expected in two weeks.

Ground support though is gradually building among people like Shamim Ahmed who has owned a shop in Meena Bazaar for 40 years.

''As long as we do not get displaced, we are happy to help the corporation in relocation. What's wrong if we get increased space and air conditioning, if more tourists come, the area will be better off,'' said Shamim Ahmed, Trader.

There might be a difference of opinion on the issue of the redevelopment of the area around the Jama Masjid but perhaps no one will deny that the area needs immediate attention.
