North India reels under cold wave

 INDIA , 22-January-2008  2:44:5 AM
After a relatively warmer beginning to the New Year, it's back to the typical winter shivers, as large parts of the plains of North and West India reel under a severe cold wave.

Adampur near Jalandhar in Punjab was the coldest place in the northern India plains on Monday with the temperature touching minus three degrees Celsius.

Temperatures in nearby Amritsar touched minus one degree and large parts of Haryana also reeled under the cold wave with temperatures between one and five degrees below normal.

While the hill states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal continued to see their regular share of sub-zero temperatures and rain and snow, the plains from Kolkata to Kutch were also caught in the grip of the cold with temperatures around one degree.

Vendors battle cold

And it's not just the homeless and the destitute who suffer in this cold weather.

There are thousands in Delhi who ply their trade well into the night and for them braving the cold is merely a part of earning two square meals a day.

Cold weather may be a good reason for many to bunk office but not for people like Keshav Chandra though. Work starts for this roadside groundnut vendor at 10 am and stretches well past 11 pm, while his customers shiver.

The weather is an occupational hazard and comes with the territory.

''I sell groundnuts and chana mixture. I come here at 10 in the morning and I am here till 11pm. I have been doing this for the past 13 years. Whether it is hot, cold or raining, I have to do it to earn a living,'' said Keshav.

Winter is exceptionally tough season for Keshav, who is physically challenged.

''My limbs become numb by the time I reach home. The flow of blood decreases in my leg. I have to warm my leg by the fireside for about half an hour or else I can't sleep,'' said Keshav.

Before heading for home, after a tough day at work, Keshav has some time for friends like the florist Bhupinder.
