With the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) extended up to Velachery and frequency of trains increased, the service is gaining in popularity.
But, for many wanting to use the service, particularly the old or the ailing, getting to the platform is proving to be an uphill task.
S. Subramanian (62), a commuter at the Chintadripet station, is annoyed that the lifts at the station do not work.
“I am afraid to take the escalator. So I have to climb the flight of stairs to reach the platform on the second floor. By the time I get there, I am exhausted.”
The lifts at most of the elevated stations do not work, the exception being Thiruvanmiyur. The escalators function, but many commuters require assistance to use them. Railway authorities have not posted anybody to provide such assistance. Most of the escalators are away from the ticket counters and escape the commuters’ notice.
A senior official of Southern Railway says barring the escalator at Chindadripet, all others are working.
Admitting there is still more work to be done with regard to passenger amenities on the Tirumailai-Velachery stretch, he says, “We hope they will get over by March-end.”
