The body of a young Army Captain, who was killed a day after he was awarded a gallantry medal will be sent back to his home in Jammu on Monday.
27-year old Captain SK Chaudhary was killed in a fierce encounter with the banned militant outfit ULFA in the Mechaki reserve in Upper Assam.
On Republic Day this year, Captain Chaudhary was awarded the Sena medal for a similar encounter with ULFA. He was due to get married next month.
Based on a tip off, army's Gorkha regiment raided Mechaki forest area at Hankhati where the militants, including hardcore ULFA ultra Joond Bhuyan, involved in several heinous crimes, were sheltered.
On approach of the troops, the militants opened fire and the security men retaliated, triggering a heavy exchange of fire, which continued for nearly an hour.
In the shootout, Captain Choudhury, who was a prime target for ULFA after he shot dead two leaders last year, sustained grievous injury and was airlifted to the air force hospital at Roroiya where he was declared dead while Bhuyan managed to escape.
Bhuyan's close aides, Chandan Dohotia, alias Getley, and Tutu Moran were killed in the encounter.
Following the encounters, the 27-year-old army officer hailing from Meerut and an NDA product was unsuccessfully attacked twice by the ULFA. (With PTI inputs)
