Kids skip schools as Delhi shivers
Tripti's mother has decided not to take any chances, so the 5-year-old will skip school this entire week.
 INDIA , 29-January-2008  3:22:3 AM
With the dip in the mercury levels 6 degrees below normal, Delhi on Monday witnessed the second coldest day of the season. With the entire city shivering, it was a blessing in disguise for children who chose to stay warm back at their home.

Tripti's mother has decided not to take any chances, so the 5-year-old will skip school this entire week.

''The woolens are not enough to protect them from the chill. I won't send her school if the same conditions prevail. I had to send my son who's in class three because of his exams but he also cries when woken up in the morning,'' said Jyoti, Tripti's mother.

Many schools have reported a drop in attendance and for once, teachers are just fine with children skipping school.

''Though the temperature was low there was not much of students not attending school. Some sections did witness low attendance. I would prefer students to stay at home for two days and be healthy rather coming six days to school and then fall ill,'' said Lata Vaidyanathan, Principal, Modern school.

''I would advice students to stay healthy, eat healthy and take on the weather bravely,'' she added.

More mature students wish the same privilege would extend to them.

''Going to the college early in the morning is a problem, so either the college should be closed down in extreme cold or the winter vacations should be extended,'' said Vikram, Student, Khalsa College.

Even if you are not lucky enough to miss school, college or office take the weatherman's warning and wrap yourself in plenty of warm clothing over the next week.
