Tamil Nadu govt accused of tapping
It is a tap dance that is sure to keep the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister who also holds the home portfolio on his toes.
 INDIA , 1-February-2008  0:45:27 AM
The intelligence wings are often referred to as the 'dirty tricks dept'! After reports accused the Karunanidhi government of using its intelligence sleuths to tap the telephones of political leaders, lawyers, journalists and even senior police officials while the government has denied the charge it certainly has raised the political temperature in Tamil Nadu.

The report accuses the ruling DMK of playing big brother by using its intelligence wing to eavesdrop on the telephone conversations of many political leaders, police officials, lawyers and journalists.

Despite his denial of this charge in the assembly, Chief Minister Karunanidhi is finding it hard to pacify even his allies over what is now being called 'Tamil Nadu's Watergate.'

''Why are you tapping the phones? Is this a dictatorship? Are we terrorists? What are we going to say?'' asked Dr S Ramdoss, founder, PMK.

It is fodder for the opposition during the assembly session. Some parties have threatened to go to court; others have demanded compensation and a few have sought information under the RTI Act.

''It's a complete invasion of privacy and fundamental rights. The CM's denial in the assembly does not satisfy me. There's more to it,'' said Sarath Kumar, President, AISMK.

Under Section 5 of the Telegraph Act only phones of militants and suspected anti-social elements can be tapped and that too only after written permission from the Home Secretary.

The report said that the Tamil Nadu police has not followed this established procedure and is said to have placed several numbers of prominent persons on its watch list.

It is a tap dance that is sure to keep the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister who also holds the home portfolio on his toes.
