Kidney scam accused received extort
Then, a few months later, the calls stopped. Sunita's extortionists were deported from Dubai in another case
 INDIA , 2-February-2008  1:29:35 AM
He is one of the most wanted men in the country right now. Dr Santosh Raut, accused in the multi crore kidney transplant is on the run. But even as an Interpol alert is sounded out across the world, back home an underworld link has emerged to the story.

Dr Santosh Raut was a target of extortion. Phone calls, letters and photographs of Dr Raut smeared in red paint were used to send a message to his ex-wife, saying, pay up or face the consequences.

Some of these deadly calls were received at the front desk of a suburban hotel, owned by Sunita Raut and managed by a family friend who shudders at the recollection.

''He said, 'I am Shekhar, Shakeel's man.' He asked me for Dr Raut's phone number. He also sent threatening letters to this hotel. After this, madam lodged a complaint to the anti-extortion cell,'' said Ravi Pandey, Manager, Liberty Hotel.

Then, a few months later, the calls stopped. Sunita's extortionists were deported from Dubai in another case. Two of these, Shakeel sharpshooters, re-arrested on charges of extortion.

''The family started recieving threatening calls since 2005 to pay Rs 1 crore as extortion. The two arrested were Tanvir and Zameer,'' said Deven Bharti, Deputy Commissioner of Police.

But these calls raise many questions, if Sunita had divorced Dr Raut in 1995, why did she receive the threatening calls in 2005? Was she still in touch with the doctor? Did she know about his whereabouts, questions only she can answer.
