Mumbai's tussle with identity
The detentions come after more than 25 other MNS supporters were let off on bail on Monday for targeted violence against people of north Indian origin
 INDIA , 5-February-2008  1:40:51 AM
Hours after the Maharashtra government vowed to crack down hard on those responsible for the violence in Mumbai over the last two days, 13 more activists of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena were detained by the police in Mumbai early Tuesday morning.

The detentions come after more than 25 other MNS supporters were let off on bail on Monday for targeted violence against people of north Indian origin.

Those targetted mainly included taxi drivers, milk and vegetable vendors and Bhojpuri cinema theatres.

Despite an FIR being registered against Raj Thackeray in connection with the violence, no action has been taken.

This follows repeated assurances of strong action, by the home minister and the chief minister of the state.

Meanwhile, a peace rally organised by Sanjay Nirupam is slated to be held at Shivaji Park on Tuesday. There are also chances of Samajwadi Party workers organising a dharna outside Raj Thackareys home.

Common man's plight

But caught in this political crossfire is the common man, the faceless hundreds who ensure that no matter what, this city runs full steam.

NDTV met one such man, who may not be a Marathi Manoo, but is as much a Mumbaikar as anybody else.

Thirty-year-old Mustakeen from Faizabad says that despite the fear created by some political groups in the city, Mumbai is his home.

''My name is Mustakeen and I have been driving a taxi for 7 years now. I am from Faizabad in UP. My father came to Mumbai first. He owns the taxi I drive, I feel bad when someone asks me to leave Mumbai. I have lived my life here my job is here. I am an Indian and I can live wherever I like. I will never leave. I consider Mumbai my own city.

''People should know that the entire city runs because of people from UP and Bihar. All the vegetable vendors, guards, labourers who build the city, the taxi driver who takes you to the airport. The city will stop if they go away.
