Bandh affects life in West Bengal
Flight movement in the morning was normal, airport sources said
 INDIA , 6-February-2008  0:54:4 AM
Normal life was affected in West Bengal on Wednesday morning due to a 24-hour bandh called by the Forward Bloc, an ally of the ruling Left Front, in protest against the killing of its six supporters in police firing during the party's agitation programme.

The toll in the police firing went up to six as a member of the National Volunteer Force, Krishna Kanta Burman, succumbed to injuries in a hospital at Dinhata, I G Police (law and order) Raj Kanojia said.

Shops were closed and transport services hit by the bandh. Few vehicles, including government buses, were seen plying on the roads, police said.

Train services on both the Sealdah and Howrah divisions were affected due to blockades on railway tracks organised by FB supporters, a railway spokesman said.

Some trains on the Howrah main and chord lines have been cancelled after blockades at Kamarkundu, Baidyabati and some other places, he said.

Flight movement in the morning was normal, airport sources said.

Reports said the bandh was complete in Coochbehar district, where the firing took place.

Five Forward Bloc supporters were killed in a police firing on Thursday, while one succumbed to injuries later, during a party's anti-government protest in Coochbehar district.

This is for the first time since the Left Front came to power in 1977 that a bandh has been called by a front constituent against its own government.
