| Super Tuesday is the election, the world is watching. Nearly half of America voted to choose the Democratic and Republican nominees to run for the White House this November.
It's a primary race that has galvanised Americans, voters turned out in higher numbers than ever before to cast their vote for an unlikely group of presidential hopefuls, a woman and a black American on the Democrat side; a Vietnam war veteran, a Mormon millionaire and former pastor among the Republicans.
The tally at the moment is:
Barack Obama: 15 states in all, 13 won on Super Tuesday
Hillary Clinton: 12 states, 8 won on Super Tuesday
John McCain: 12 states, 9 on Super Tuesday
Mike Huckabee: 6 states, 5 won on Super Tuesday
Mitt Romney: 10 states, 6 won on Super Tuesday
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama swapped wins, while Hillary won the big states, Obama won a surprising number of other states. And though Hillary is ahead their race is still neck and neck.
Democratic party rules allow candidates to share delegates, meaning America will have to wait until the next round of big primaries to know who its Democratic candidate will be.
The Republicans have a clear front-runner in Arizona Senator John McCain. The former war veteran has benefited from the split in the conservative vote between his key rival Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, who has made some significant gains on Super Tuesday.
