An Orkut profile and a 6-page suicide note is all that is left behind of a class 12 student, who allegedly couldn't take the combined pressure of board exams and the IIT entrance.
Ashutosh and the child who died were in the same coaching class for IIT.
''I don't feel the pressure, but my friends do. They slip into depression because of it,'' said Ashutosh.
Every year, the last few weeks before the board exams are witness to students on the edge of desperation.
In 2005 many children in Delhi killed themselves because of exam-related stress. In 2006 even more students caved in to the incessant pressure.
Experts agree that the education system is far too taxing.
There have been some attempts to relax the rules. More marks have been set aside for schools to hand out at their discretion in practical exams.
The CBSE says the best defence against board exam pressure is to make counsellors available on the phone.
But contrary to the claims, there is no single centralized helpline as of now and students who make an effort to reach out, end up wading through a website that lists 37 different phone numbers.
Moreover, counsellors are available only in shifts.
At least 6 of the numbers listed were discovered to be invalid. The resultant scenario is nothing short of alarming at such a delicate point in time and stresses the need for more to be done in this regard.
