Will Raj Thackeray be arrested?
Punishment under this section includes imprisonment, which may extend to three years, or with a fine, or both.
 INDIA , 8-February-2008  0:33:2 AM
Thursday was a day of suspense with one question on every Mumbaikar's mind - Will the MNS chief Raj Thackeray be arrested, five days after his activists fomented trouble across the city?

Pressure also mounted on the state government to take action. Legal opinion from the state advocate general suggested that there are sufficient grounds to arrest Raj Thackeray under Section 153 (a).

This implies promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, caste or community, residence and language and committing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony.

Punishment under this section includes imprisonment, which may extend to three years, or with a fine, or both.

The legal opinion has been conveyed to the state government but the chief minister, naturally, is a worried man.

''For an arrest warrant, we are seeking legal opinion of the Advocate General. The police will take action accordingly,'' said Vilasrao Deshmukh, Chief Minister, Maharashtra.

It's a state government that's buying time, taking no chances, especially with Prime Minister scheduled to visit the state on Friday.

''It's more important to maintain law and order in the city. We are still looking for strong evidence Law and order is important especially since the Prime Minster visiting Maharashtra tomorrow. The Attorney general suggestions will be sent to CP for analysis,'' said R R Patil, Home Minister, Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, there was unrest in parts of Mumbai on Thursday. Taxi drivers, most of them north Indians, threatened to go strike, then cancelled their agitation with MNS workers threatening to court arrest.

But despite the unrest, there was one man who was not walking on eggshells - Raj Thackeray, who left Mumbai late on Thursday for an engagement in Pune.

However, Pune Police withdrew permission for his function on Friday.

Raj was to flag off an adventure sports event at Police Grounds in Shivaji Nagar in the city.
