Erratic weather across India has renewed the focus on climate change.
While the world community has recognised India's concerns about developing countries having to bear the cost of high emissions from developed nations, the freak weather has raised fears that the impact of climate change is far worse than anticipated.
The winter in 2008 has sprung surprises.
Mumbai had coldest day in decades, Jammu got the heaviest snowfall in 50 years and there is an unusual chill in Gujarat.
Perhaps, the effects of climate change are likely to hit developing countries like India the most.
The United Nations said that rich countries like the United States are just not doing enough.
''No, I don't think that USA is doing enough at all, can not think of any industrialised nation that is doing enough. So that is where the argument lies. It is between those countries, who say that you have become rich and now you want us to stay poor,'' said Yvo De Boer, Executive secretary, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
At a summit in Delhi, the first big international gathering on climate change since the Bali conference last year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too appealed for help to tackle the global menace.
''We cannot continue with a global development model in which some countries continue to maintain high carbon emissions, while the development options available for developing countries get constrained,'' said Singh.
Denmark, that will host the 15th UN climate conference next year, said India's concerns cannot be ignored.
''I think we all recognise that India needs to continue on its economic growth and so the big task would be - how can we have continued economic growth in developing countries in a sustainable manner?'' said Connie Hedegaard, Danish Minister of Climate and Energy.
The international community has recognised that India's economic growth cannot be hampered at the expense of a few rich countires.
