A severe shortage of LPG cylinders has hit various parts of north India. The oil ministry says it could take at least a week to tide over the current crisis.
States of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, J&K, Rajasthan and areas near Delhi have reported a shortage.
People are forced to wait for two weeks or more for their refills.
Oil companies have reduced the supply of gas cylinders to cut their losses after international crude prices shot up.
The companies are said to be running losses of over 300 rupees on every cylinder.
The food and civil supplies department of the government is reportedly conducting raids on gas gowdowns in order to clamp down on hoarding.
Consumers also resorted to panic booking after reports of a steep hike in prices. The government has asked the companies to increase their supply in order to meet the rise in demand
