Petrol price hike raises people's..
The price has mounted up to nearly 50 times that amount. But still, a hike does not prove to be a deterrent to the spilling effect.
 INDIA , 15-February-2008  1:33:18 AM
The fuel price hike that came into force on Thursday midnight has come as a setback to the common man, who has already been bearing the brunt of inflation.

Alok Moitra, a 56-year-old resident of South Delhi, has witnessed the increases that have occurred in petrol price since the time it was Re 1.

The price has mounted up to nearly 50 times that amount. But still, a hike does not prove to be a deterrent to the spilling effect.

However, it's of a somewhat different kind now.

Alok says, ''I started driving my bike around 1966, when the petrol prices were nearly 65 paise per litre. In every petrol prices hike, the casualty was my bike. My father desisted me to take out the bike.''

The petrol prices went up by 2 Rs per litre on Thursday midnight. This does not just affect those who drive their own vehicles, but also those who use public transport or buy food.

Sushma Moitra, a lecturer with the Delhi University believes that fuel price hikes are unavoidable and it is now time to rethink and redraw household budgets.

She says, ''Three consequences are due. These are rise in the prices of the milk product, rise in the prices of transport, fruits and vegetable and the heightened payment of the domestic helps.''

Alok Moitra, however, may not blame the government for the fuel price hike, but does wonder about the fallout.

He enquires, ''The government will give me DA and other perks, providing support to manage my budget. But what about the unorganised working class who will directly be affected and whose employer may not even adjust their salaries.''
