Following a day-long sit-in by relatives of an undertrial, who was brought dead to Government Royapettah Hospital on Friday, tension gripped localities surrounding the hospital.
The deceased, Nagalingam (42) was brought to the hospital early on Friday morning from the Puzhal prison where he had been lodged three days ago.
He was arrested in the Cheyyar taluk in a prohibition case.
According to Puzhal police, it is a common practice to allow prisoners to come out of their cells every morning for a bath.
On Friday around 7.30 a.m., Nagalingam was allowed to come out of his cell for a shower, but he slipped and fell.
He was taken to GRH around 9.30 a.m. By 11.30 a.m. on Friday, his relatives gathered outside the hospital. Shops put up their shutters even as people staged a sit-in preventing traffic on the busy Royapettah High Road. By noon, the relatives gathered at the mortuary and refused to take possession of the body. The shops remained closed for the entire day and police personnel were posted.
Member of Legislative Assembly Selva Perunthagai belonging to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi helped defuse the tension and around 7 p.m. the body was handed over to the relatives after autopsy.
