The arrest of Faheem Ansari, one of the six Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists nabbed by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force, has brought into focus the danger that Mumbai barely escaped.
A lodge in Mumbai's Grant Road area was home to Faheem Ansari, where he plotted what could have been one of the biggest terrorist strikes in the city.
He worked and lived at the lodge, not far from the headquarters of the Anti Terror Squad of Maharashtra.
''The Anti Terror Squad paid us a friendly visit,'' said owner of the Indo-Gulf Lodge.
It was at the lodge that Faheem had conducted recess to target prime security establishments in the city.
The targets, the headquarters of the city and state police and the naval base, all top security establishments were on the hit list of the LeT.
''LeT have moved out from targetting boundaries and now they are also targetting hinter land as they want to spread terror,'' said Hemant Karkare, Chief, Anti Terror Squad.
Faheem, a resident of Goregaon, moved to Dubai in 2005 and was lost to his family and the world he lived in. Yet, another brother Osman is also on the ATS radar.
''We don't know anything about him. We were in touch with him for a year and later lost contact,'' said Apu Bhai, Faheem's brother.
Faheem's operations consisted of giving logistical support to LeT modules in Mumbai. But the failure of Mumbai's security agencies in tracking him earlier is a chilling reminder that Mumbai continues to be actively on the hit list of terror groups.
