Indian travellers going global
Goa for New Years is now pass . The travellers look nothing short of Bali or something even more exotic.
 INDIA , 20-February-2008  2:44:46 AM
Nothing perhaps symbolises the urban Indian's status consciousness more than the Indian traveller.

Goa for New Years is now pass . The travellers look nothing short of Bali or something even more exotic.

The Indian is now one of the most frequent travellers across the globe and predictions are that number will increase by 50 per cent before the year is over.

Payal Sanghvi is just back from a 10-day trip to South-East Asia. The vacation with her family cost her just Rs 55,000 - an amount the family could easily afford for a foreign trip.

It's not even been six months that the family is already planning a longer trip to the US.

''There are packages which are made to according to your budget. A lot of personal finance options are available now. Who had heard that there will be finance provided for traveling,'' said Payal Sanchavi, Investment Advisor.

India has seen an increase in numbers of people travelling abroad for two simple reasons. The first is the booming economy and the second is the meltdown in America, bringing the dollar drastically down compared to the rupee.

And that's not all as several frequent flyers feel the Indian tourist has become image conscious now, making lifestyle changes that reflect in their holidays.

''The Indian traveller has become very adventurous. He wants to witness different cultures, try different cuisines and meet different people,'' said Swati Sharan, Television Professional.

Travel overseas, particularly to South-East Asia, has seen a rise of 25 per cent from last year.

It's a fact that is reflected in the way Indian travellers are tempted. And travel operators believe that by the end of 2008, there could be a 50 per cent increase in numbers.

''In last 2-3 years, the trend has changed. Overseas weekend destinations - South-East Asia and Sri Lanka - are becoming very affordable especially where the hotel tariffs are concerned which is a major deciding factor.
