Mild Quakes in Kuwait
Earthquakes are not a threat to Kuwait
 KUWAIT , 25-February-2008  13:28:8 PM
Mild quakes in Kuwait may be linked to ..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mild quakes often sensed in southern Kuwait may be attributed to some man-caused activities, according to a Jordanian seismologist.

These moderate tremors, recorded in the south of Kuwait, are 'minor activities that might have been caused by work in the industrial sector,' said Najib Abou Karaki, a seismoloy professor at Jordan University in an interview with Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

Very large machines and devices are usually used in oil drilling and exploration as well as processing of the crude.

Moderate tremors affecting the Gulf region, namely the recent mild quake recorded in the United Arab Emirates, have been linked to frictions of the Iranian and Arab plates, located on the Iranian territory, he said.

Forecasting earthquakes is a very hard task, but Arab studies regarding patterns of such tremors are very much useful in this regard, he pointed out, alluding in particular to 'very respectful' studies, prepared by the eminent Kuwaiti scientist and researcher, Dr Abdullah Yousef Al-Ghunaim.

He described as regular the recent wave of quakes that hit Middle Eastern countries, namely Lebanon and Jordan, noting that frictions in the regional plates take place every several years.

Southern Lebanon and other Middle Eastern regions were jolted with at least 15 quakes that inflicted damage and injuries. The epicenter of the quake in the south of Lebanon was located at a fault stretching across several villages in the mountainous region.

The regional quakes are also caused by a major fault stretching from the Red Sea across Aqaba Bay to Turkey.
