Doctors strike to continue
The woman died and her relatives allegedly attacked junior doctors and later ransacked the hospital.
 INDIA , 26-February-2008  0:13:16 AM
Junior doctors in Karnataka have decided to continue their strike, with the backing of the Indian Medical Association.

The doctors first went on strike in the Bowring Hospital of Bangalore last week when a pregnant woman fell from one of the cots in labour ward of the hospital.

The woman died and her relatives allegedly attacked junior doctors and later ransacked the hospital.

The Governor's representative had assured the doctors that their need for extra security would be addressed and some of the doctors had decided to call of the strike.

But on Monday morning, after a further meeting, the doctors decided to continue their protest.

''The Indian Medical Association totally supports the cause of the junior doctors. They are not fighting for any money or additional amenities, only requesting the government to protect them. When they are discharging their duties properly - the concerned people will have to take stern action and protect them. They should not be harm or hit on the pretext of harming the patient. It is a wrong attitude, so we are continuing the strike,'' said PN Govindarajulu, Vice President, Indian Medical Association, Bangalore.

''In the absence of a popular elected government, we want the Governor to convene a meeting of top police officials to discuss the issue,'' he added.

Doctors were demanding an ordinance like the one in Andhra Pradesh that makes an attack on doctors a non-bailable offence.

About 1, 000 junior doctors from state run hospitals were on strike protesting against the lack of protection for doctors
